Repair and homemade rosin
Violin specific rosin is a commonly used consumable, and it is also prone to damage due to bumps and drops, requiring repair. The method introduced here can be used for repairing rosin or for homemade rosin. The method is simple.
The first thing to prepare is a silicone mold, which is a cylindrical silicone mold with a diameter of 4cm and a depth of 2cm. It can be used for a long time and is easy to demold after pouring and cooling. This mold is also used for commercial rosin.
When repairing rosin, it is necessary to first use a coarse needle to crush the old rosin for melting. Homemade rosin can be made from pine resin, and the quality can be achieved by using first grade steam rosin. Similarly, large pieces of rosin need to be crushed with a coarse needle.
When heating and melting, break the rosin into small pieces. Heat and melt in a small stainless steel basin or pot. It is best to use an electric stove for heating, and a gas stove can also be used. Always keep watch during heating and do not leave people. If the rosin is damaged by remelting, the temperature should be controlled below 120 ° C, based on just melting the rosin without smoking. If smoking occurs, it should be removed from the heat in a timely manner. The temperature and time required to melt the rosin affect its performance, and special attention should be paid. When making new rosin, control the heating temperature and time by yourself, without being restricted by smoking. Sometimes it can be boiled for several hours, and the longer the time, the more volatile substances and darker the color. But the temperature should not exceed 200 ° C to avoid fire.
When casting, it is important to wait for the rosin liquid to cool slightly, become more fluid, and increase surface tension before casting. This way, the rosin surface will be convex and easy to use. If the resin is cast immediately after leaving the fire, the surface tension of the rosin liquid is low and it will adhere to the edge of the mold, resulting in a concave surface that is inconvenient for future use.
