Common knowledge of choosing a bow and qin

This is a question that is most closely related to the performer. The relationship between the performer and the bow is even greater than that with the qin. The bow is an extension of the arm, and every note must be expressed through the interpretation of the bow. The quality of the playing technique is closely related to the performance of the bow. A bow with excellent performance has an absolute impact on your qin skills.

The construction of a bow is much simpler than that of a violin, but there are many strict requirements in this simple construction. Some of these conditions are conflicting, and when one condition is met, another function must be sacrificed. For example, a stable bow must have weaker jumping ability on the string, and a bow with strong jumping ability must have lower stability. The selection criteria are based on what kind of musical style to interpret. Light and lively music, using a lighter bow with strong jumping ability can help the performer perform higher-level skills, while a heavier bow will make the sound sound heavy and round.

At present, there are two main types of bow materials: wood and carbon fiber. Wood is more expensive than carbon fiber, and wooden bows can be divided into two categories: handmade and mass-produced. The price of handmade wooden bows ranges from approximately 1800 US dollars to 6000 US dollars, while mass-produced wooden bows range from 130 Canadian dollars to around 1300 Canadian dollars. There are reasons for such a large price range, the most important of which is the material used for the bow body, and the material used for the accessories. Carbon fiber bows are mass-produced using molds, characterized by high tension and low price. The most important thing about a bow is its tension. It is good if two different bows can achieve higher tension under the same bending amplitude. The bow with higher tension can tighten the bow hair, and the tighter bow hair can make a louder sound. This is crucial for professional performers because they must interpret the music while playing. Without a good bow in a large playing venue, the audience cannot hear every note clearly. The taut bow hair also makes the amplitude of the small and large sounds wider, and the performer can easily obtain subtle sounds and resonate with the grand melody. In terms of wooden bows, in order to achieve greater tension, the selection of materials for the bow body is very strict. It can be said that the texture of the materials determines the performance of the bow. Mass production bows use low tension wood to reduce costs, which is suitable for beginners to use. However, such bows may cause frustration for players when they need some skills to play. This situation is not due to insufficient practice, but rather the bow's functions are not sufficient to meet the requirements. If it is simply to obtain greater tension, then simply increasing the diameter of the bow body can easily obtain tension. The problem is that its weight has become heavier, and a bulky bow cannot be skillfully operated. The weight requirement for a violin bow is also very strict, because it is pressed down on the string from top to bottom, not like a cello bow that contacts the string from the side.
