Churchill's violin

This violin does not truly belong to British wartime Prime Minister Churchill. But the materials used for the violin are absolutely related to Churchill - it's about the wood used to make the violin, which was the wooden box Churchill used to collect cigars.
Due to the size of the wooden box, this violin is smaller than a regular violin.

Is it really possible to make a violin with a cigar box? Firstly, let's talk about the characteristics of cigar boxes - controlling humidity between 68-72%, which maintains the best condition for cigars (otherwise, where would thick smoke come from?). Therefore, the materials used for cigar boxes are quite particular, usually made of Spanish shirt wood, and the box body is generally about 2 centimeters thick; Therefore, it is not impossible to make a violin from a cigar box. In fact, during the Great Depression, violins made from cigar boxes were quite popular among Irish folk musicians.

Churchill's violin was made by William Robinson in 1956. Robinson was not a college pianist, but his craftsmanship was excellent. Robinson purchased a wooden box from Clarissa Eden, whose husband, Anthony Eden, was the Foreign Secretary and recognized successor during Churchill's tenure. Unlike Churchill, Eden enjoyed smoking pipes (pipes were also favored by the British working class, some say Eden only smoked pipes for the sake of votes), and Churchill's cigar box was naturally useless.

The violin, apart from its small size, is characterized by the "Made in Cuba" stamp on its back. The violin was successfully sold by Ingles&Hayday auction house for nearly £ 7000 in October 2016. The new owner of the violin is a bar owner and amateur violinist. If you want to listen to the recording, there is an online recording of violinist Kerenza Peacock playing this instrument.
