Matteo Gofriller

Matteo Goffriller (1659-1742) was a Venetian luthier known for producing high-quality cellos. Goffriel was born in Bricksen (formerly known as Bressanone), and little is known about his life in Venice before 1685. He is considered a qin maker active between 1689-1740 and was the founder of the Venetian School, which was founded during the period when Venice was one of the world's important centers of music activity.

Long ago, Goffriel's cello was mistakenly believed to be from the Guarneri family, Carlo Bagonzi, or even Stradivari, until his works began to be discovered in the 1920s. His earliest recognized work was an ancient cello from 1689. In 1686, Goffriel married Madonna Maria Caiser in Madonna delle Grazie, Venice. Over the course of 26 years, they had 12 children (5 boys and 7 girls). Francesco Goffriller was long considered the younger brother of Matteo Goffriller, but recent research suggests that he is the son of Matteo Goffriller. Matteo Gofriller passed away in Venice in 1742.
